Last night’s race took us to a new course in Watopia, the “Loop de Loop”, for the opening stage of the Zwift Games, Zwift’s big March racing series. We did two laps of the route, with each lap featuring a flat first half through the Esses, and then a short sharp climb up the Hilly KOM.

The race was huge, and fast, with 131 starters in the B category. Unlike many Zwift races, there were barely any stragglers, with the whole group holding together and pushing hard through the opening flat section. Melissa fell off the back on the little climb coming back into the Esses. I was holding on by a thread, and as soon as we hit the KOM, that thread snapped, and I watched the front group of 80 or so riders pull away. After that it was mostly small group work for the second half, as we swept up a few of the stragglers that had also been shelled in the climb. Henry managed to stay up front until the second climb, quite an accomplishment, and ended up with a solid finish in this super-strong field.

Results from tonight’s race:

  1. Henry Weis (B) – 39 of 95 = 60.0 points
  2. Jonathan O’Keeffe (B) – 73 of 95 = 24.2 points
  3. Melissa Warwick (B) – 86 of 95 = 13.7 points
