We’ve been racing giant Tour de Zwift races for this whole winter racing season so far, but that series has wrapped up, so tonight we were back to our roots on the Downtown Dolphin course in Crit City, with a long race of 18 laps. I think of this as the “backwards” lap, because the first time I raced here it was in the other direction (the Bell Lap course, which runs counter-clockwise). In any case, this direction features a short sharp cobbled climb on every lap, with no discernible descents, which makes it feel like you’re going uphill all the time (kind of like last week’s route, come to think of it).

We had about 35 starters, and Henry, Dusty, Melissa and I settled into the lead group of around 20 for the first few laps. The pace was super-aggressive, and we lost a rider or two on just about every lap. Melissa succumbed after about a half-dozen laps, and Henry followed suit about halfway through, leaving Dusty and me up front. Apparently Dusty’s idea of fun is to attack on just about every lap, and I think he had a lot of fun on this ride. By the end we were down to eight or so, and Dusty and I had a head-to-head sprint-fest that ended up with both of us just missing the podium.

Results from tonight’s race:

  1. Jonathan O’Keeffe (B) – 4 of 18 = 87.5 points
  2. Dusty King (B) – 5 of 18 = 81.7 points
  3. Henry Weis (B) – 10 of 18 = 52.5 points
  4. Melissa Warwick (B) – 16 of 18 = 22.8 points
