Tonight we mixed things up a bit by riding Stage One of the Absa Cape Epic series. The Cape Epic is a multi-stage MTB in South Africa, an environment that is a little hard to replicate in our sweaty basements, but the organizers did the best the could by putting us all on mountain bikes. This prompted a bit of last-minute panic-shopping in the Zwift bike store, as everyone realized that all the available mountain bikes are heavy and slow, and tried to figure out which one would be least heavy and least slow (the consensus seemed to be the Trek Supercaliber). We also had consensus agreement that the kit they forced us all into, which looked like the a mutant zebra-tiger hybrid, was horrible.

Once the race got started, we got to experience the strange sensation of rolling along in a peloton of mountain bikes on pavement at 30 mph. The speed diminished as we climbed the volcano, and the peloton shattered into smaller groups. The climb was followed by a descent back down the volcano and a short flat lead-in to the sprint finish inside the volcano, where we all enjoyed watching another one of Michael’s patented five-minute all-out sprints to the finish.
